A defeat at home to Wigan Athletic, when a draw would have been enough to prolong their stay for at least another season, ultimately sealed United's fate. But behind the scenes, a legal battle every bit as furious as the one now being waged for sole control of the club was unfolding as United, after West Ham had been found guilty of fielding ineligible players, argued the Londoners should have been preparing for life in the second-tier rather than themselves.
Although they faced each other in the Cup five years ago, October 26th's match at the London Stadium will be the first time United have faced their rivals from the capital in League competition since the 'Carlos Tevez Affair'.

Eight months earlier, before Alan Curbishley's side were beaten 3-0 in South Yorkshire, Tevez and his fellow Argentine Javier Mascherano had stunned commentators, supporters and fellow players alike by moving to the capital from Corinthians. Although the latter rarely featured, Tevez excelled in claret and blue; even after it emerged the two men's agreements breached PL rules. West Ham, who stayed up by the skin of their teeth, were fined £5.5m. United argued they should have been deducted points instead. An independent FA tribunal agreed, with its chair Lord Griffiths arguing: "We have no doubt that West Ham would have secured at least three fewer points over the 2006-07 season if Carlos Tevez had not been playing for the club." The trouble was, that ruling came in 2009, after United's efforts to be reinstated had failed and their slide into League One had begun. The £20m in compensation Kevin McCabe clawed back was deserved but, by his own admission, small beer compared to the fortune in TV rights and solidarity payments United might have earned in the meantime.

McCabe is now embroiled in a dispute with his fellow co-owner HRH Prince Abdullah bin Musa'ad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud following the collapse of their partnership. Although he adopted a conciliatory tone when United travelled to the Boleyn Ground at the beginning of the 2014/15 season, those on the terraces have been less forgiving. Indeed, there have been claims on social media that some West Ham fans are planning to wear Tevez masks when they host Chris Wilder's team and journey north in January. If they prove correct, doubtless United's followers will conjure a suitable response for what could be two of the most emotive fixtures of both clubs' seasons"

Fuck 'em.
They got relegated because they were shit. I believe I'm right in saying that the ONLY player from their relegated squad who was picked up by a PL team was Jagielka.
They're best ignored completely, they be back down at the end of the season anyway.

The idea that Tevez was worth 3 points completely ignores the fact that the arrival of the two argies upset our team spirit, that had just got us to a cup final, and got us into s relegation scrap because it took so long for Tevez to find any effective form.
Disgraceful legal defence by our briefs. I could have done a better job on acid.

Fuck Sheffield United, they’re about as relevant to us as Tevez these days.
Couldn’t relegate us on the pitch, couldn’t relegate us in court.
I’d rather see us take the piss out of them being funded by bin Laden than wear Tevez masks up there.

There was no assumption of a 3 points deduction.
A lot of people wanted us to be deducted points as well as the fine.

There was no assumption of a 3 points deduction. The fine was the punishment and SU failed in their attempts to overturn that decision.
The Griffiths tribunal (which we voluntarily agreed to) was a means of working out what were the consequences of us breaching the rules and what compensation was owed to SU.
The Griffiths rulings were:
1. We knew the side contracts were in breach of the rules.
2. We could not sign the argies any other way.
3. The argies were worth at least 3 points to us over the course of the season.
Our defense to point 1 was pathetic. We claimed ignorance of the 3rd party rule. This was daft as we'd already testified that we had approached the Premier League about the arrangement and they said it broke the rules.
Kia shafted us on point 2 in saying that they would not have agreed to us signing the argies without the dodgy contract as we were not a champions league club. (The Liverpool contract approach with Macherano was not open to us). Whether he said this to shaft us or it was the truth is up for debate, but that was the evidence presented at the tribunal.
We offered no defence to point 3. Almost everyone that testified including our side said that Tevez was our best player by a mile. Griffith took it upon himself to assume this meant he was worth at least 3 points to us - i.e we would have been relegated instead of SU if we didn't break the rules.
If we had pointed out the myriad of reasons why you cannot say the argies were worth at least 3 points to us we would not have had to pay a penny. We didn't offer any at all and helped the other side because our lawyers were idiots. This is why Sullivan and co looked at suing the lawyer firm after they took over.
In summary:
We acted despicably. We pleaded guilty. We got fined.
SU got themselves relegated and we should not have had to owe them a penny.

It was the 93/94 season, but I'm sure those northern cunts will blame us for that relegation as well. Those wankers, Lord Griffin and Henry winter will pop up to say the deal that saw us swap Julian Dicks for David Burrows and Mike Marsh was illegal.

I remember seeing something about Sheffield United in the first season of the premier league , something like they was safe by March and royally messed it all up on the last day away at Chelsea in the days when Chelsea themselves were shit , and SU were relegated 92/93,l think,the program/article was done around March of their next season some fourteen seasons later (tevez season)when they looked safe but showed you how they fucked it up on the last day 92/93and it weren’t gonna happen again and then they fucked it up again but it was somehow our fault .

IMO we got off lightly, however we pleaded guilty, took our punishment and that should have been the end of the matter.
The action Sheffield United took is not how football clubs should deal with disputes.
